Essentials to make the trip safer and comfortable

Maps

It is more convenient to start a trip with a planned itinerary. Make sure to have the maps of the places you may well be driving through. This is useful in case you have to reroute to stay away from traffic or if you prefer to go on an adventure drive. A conventional or atlas map is sufficient in these cases. Some people prefer to make printouts of custom maps for the places they plan on visiting. Google Maps is an excellent resource for such maps.

GPS device and receivers

There are many travel apps nowadays for smartphones and tablets. You can easily have access to GPS so you can know where you are exactly. Other apps are useful in tracking nice places to eat, to stay for the night, park venues, and other interesting locations to visit. Weather apps will keep you and your companions updated on the areas that are sunny or where rains and storms are happening. When you reach a place it is not that easy to turn back or find another means of lodging. Moreover, there are loads of games, puzzles, quizzes, readings, and videos to keep the entire group busy.

Bring a camera

If you are planning on going someplace across country borders like Canada or Mexico, it is imperative to have your passports as well as any visas required. Remember to check that all your passports are still valid to avoid hassles and have a stress-free vacation.

Safety things

In this road trip, you may be driving through unknown places so you need to prepare some safety things. Take enough water supply as well as oil. Consider bringing a strong rope, first aid kit, duct tape, and flashlight. If you have one that does not require batteries, that is preferable. You also need a car charger, other cell phone accessories, jumper cables for the car, insect repellant, compass, pocket knife, blankets or thick sheets, umbrella, and maybe some pillows. An electricity converter to charge gadgets and devices on hand will be very handy. Emergencies can crop up anytime, so it is recommended to be always prepared for anything.
