Why Common Sense Alternative Media Is The Next Big Thing

By Jody Leach

Traditional media has been owned by a few individuals or corporations that controlled access to information in all ways. They determined how much was accessible to the public and when this information is disseminated. The rise of common sense alternative media has changed the platform. It has resulted in a more influential and less capital intensive way of disseminating information.

Specialization- alternative platforms are distinguished by specialization on particular content and areas of focus. This has helped them create a loyal viewership that has genuine interest in the things they broadcast. Broadcast channels are specializing in one area as opposed to slots for each category in the planet. Such a station attracts its audience by offering the depth that is required in coverage to maintain the interest of viewers.

Specialization has created stations focusing on such content as drama series, soap operas, reality shows, music or games. It has created certainty because the viewers know that they will watch their favorite program anytime of day or night. It is a way of creating loyalty and a sense of belonging. Conventional media only allowed a few minutes which is considered unsatisfactory.

Cost of production- traditional broadcast was expensive because of equipment, office space and cost of producing programs. This has been altered by the advent of technology which makes it possible to record using devices like mobile phones. They come with applications that can be used to edit sound, graphics and images and still produce excellent results.

Expanding internet space- the internet has provided an excellent opportunity for starters to showcase their work. There are blogs for persons interested in text where they can launch their careers. Video streaming sites like youtube offer an excellent broadcasting platform for any audio, graphic or visual content. There are no charges to operate on these platforms yet the reach is incredibly global.

Social media- the response on such platforms is instant and genuine. Friends criticize the ideas as presented in demos. Some of the most influential sites include facebook, instagram and twitter. Such exposure and criticism is good before commercialization stage.

Localized content- more people are getting attracted to broadcast in local language and about their local community. This is changing the levels of influence by mainstream outlets. It has resulted in sidelined international corporations as people move towards localized broadcast. This has greatly eaten into their market share.

Instant reach- new media provides an opportunity to reach your audience within minutes. There are no schedules when you can access certain information and neither is there restriction on location. The channels have a global reach that is instantaneous. This makes them convenient and reliable sources of information compared to the traditionally scheduled broadcast.

Mainstream platform is quickly loosing its place as the source of information of choice. The audience is becoming more selective and finding alternative and cheaper ways to broadcast. These changes have given room for variety and allowed more people to share their ideas about life. The risk of being obsolete is real unless something drastic happens. This has created a world that is cheaper and freer.
