By Albert Sung

Becoming a travel agent seems to be a more promising career to many people nowadays. This is not surprising considering that starting such a career is possible even when one is just working from home. Indeed, the Internet has been an efficient tool for many modern travel agents. Take note, though, that there's more to being a homebased travel agent than simply having your own website and social network accounts. Aside from being computer-savvy, you also have to expand your knowledge, improve your research skills and acquire more experience and expertise as a travel agent to establish your credibility in the industry.

For this type of work you have to build a strong business network first. It is recommended to start with your present circle of relationships, like family, friends and former colleagues. Maybe you are the person they usually go to when they need help for booking, like for reunions or outings. By initially providing your service to them you can learn the tricks of the trade. You'll establish connection with several airlines, resorts and hotels. And with efficient service eventually you can get more referrals.

By working hard as a homebased travel agent, you can eventually earn travel discounts for services like accommodation, car rental and tours. But while you can work at your own schedule you must set and adhere to particular number of hours for work, unless you want to offer unrestricted work hours as an extra benefit to your clients.

You must also consider targeting a specific niche. For instance, being a business travel agent allows you to cater to companies and business people who usually travel locally or abroad. If you're a beginner you can find a host corporate travel agency. Just bear in mind that before signing on with a corporate travel company, you should ask every detail you need to know, such as the compensation you will get as a travel agent and the costs you will be responsible for.
