Read To Learn More On The Different Types Of 3D Printer Filament

By Ronald Wallace

Filaments are materials that make up the thermoplastic that is used in 3D printing. These things are available in different types, and each has its own distinct characteristics and uses for any kind of project. According to standards, it has only two diameters, and also comes in different shades and tones.

The way this is made is through the process of applying heat, extruding, and then cooling off the plastic in order to transform it into the finished product. Interestingly, these plastic nurdles are transparent at first, with the different colors added as a final touch. Because there are so many, this article will be discussing the many types of 3D printer filament and its uses.

The wise thing to do is being well informed and being aware of the basic functions so you can buy the one that will work well with your work. Besides, you might end up buying the wrong one and then do the extra effort in returning it and getting a new one. To help you identify which one to purchase, this article will be relaying some the most well known and accessible plastics available in stores nowadays.

The first and most popular of its kind is called ABS. ABS is short for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and is used in a huge variety of applications because of its endurance and the fact that it is impact resistance. Apart from being tough, it still remains a certain elasticity which makes it the standard in typical printing projects.

Another material distinguished by being flexible and tough is polylactic acid, otherwise known as PLA. Due to that fact, it is often draws comparisons with ABS. These two are different though because PLA is actually low toxic and odorless. This is because PLA is made up of renewable materials and as such, no longer needs to undergo heating process during printing.

PET means polyethylene terephthalate and is the most Eco friendly material in the market today. Apart from being completely stable, odorless, and being transparent when at its initial state, PET isalso produced from recycled plastic bottles. Because of its vapor barrier and strength, PET is often utilized in packaging products, like phone and laptop cases.

HIPS is a type of biodegradable filament often used when packing compact discs, and creating trays used by doctors during life changing surgery. The reason for this, is due to the fact that it does not have any side effects when in close contact with animals and human beings.HIPS stands for high impact polystyrene, and is amongst the popular types.

Another type of plastic that is commonly found in toys, tools, bearings, and machine parts is called polyamide. If this does not ring a bell to you, it is more commonly called nylon. Nylon is a popular choice amongst those who want to have more bang for their buck. Apart from being considerably cheaper, it is wear resistant, lightweight, and possesses a great deal of elasticity as well.

These are just a few of the varying kinds of filaments used in 3D printers. There are many more, but these are the standard and most popular of the bunch. Be aware though, that the best material should be the one that will correspond with the kind of project you will be conducting. Before purchasing one, weigh out the pros and cons first to avoid wasting materials and money.
