Factors To Consider With A Family Emergency Plan

By Tammie Caldwell

Many people are concerned about their safety and that of their loved ones. Yet, there are three things to keep in mind when one is working on a family emergency plan. It is important to remember to practice, to have alternatives, and to connect. These three things will help in any situation or at least in most situations when a family is in a natural or man-made disaster.

Some people will go to seminars and read books on what to do when a disaster takes place. This is a good thing because it means that one is willing to educate themselves and stay informed. However, when the time comes, it will be difficult to do anything under pressure because a person will be stuck never having done the things they have read about.

Reading and listening to what others have to say can be a good thing, but it will not work if a person is not training. A person has to practice the things they have learned and teach their family to do the same. This is the only way not to be stuck when a real emergency takes place since everyone will be prepared.

Another mistake that most people make is not having another plan in place in the event that the first one does not work. Some individuals do not want to put in the effort to have a system that is well thought out in every way. However, if they should take the time to do this it could save them lots of trouble and misunderstanding in the future.

This calls for several approaches to one situation. One should have a number of plans in place in case something goes wrong or there is a delay of some kind. This also applies to exit routes, different places of safety that one can go to, and different numbers that one can call if one does not work.

One should also take the time to connect with others who are also interested in safety. No one knows everything they need to know in emergencies. They might know enough to get through a difficult situation up to a certain point, but sometimes there might be a neighbor who might have information that a family might not be aware of at the time.

These connections can be made by a number of different means. One can simply work with a community center in the neighborhood that deals with these types of emergencies. They can also talk to professionals in their area about what needs to be done. If there are neighbors that one is familiar with, this is also good since both families can help each other when needed.

There are many different types of disasters that one can prepare for. Families need to work as a team to make sure that everyone knows what to do without having to worry about the specifics. One can be prepared for anything, but they cannot just plan and then forget it.
