Why Romance Novel Reviews Are So Popular With So Many Readers

By Brian West

Millions of people still enjoy reading and the majority of them prefer to read real books rather than the electronic versions. Most readers have a specific genre or certain authors that they enjoy reading. Despite the scorn critics often pour on love stories, they remain one of the most popular genres. Millions of books in this category are sold each year. Luckily for them, romance novel reviews can be accessed on line easily.

One of the reasons why romantic literature remains so popular is because it allows readers to escape into worlds where they want themselves to be. Romantic stories may be pure escapism, but there is nothing wrong with wanting to escape, at least for a little while, to a make belief world where everything works out just the way it should be, at least at the end.

Most reviewers publish their opinions on specific works on blogs or on their websites. Even a rudimentary search will reveal that there are numerous sites focusing on reviewing books dealing with romantic publications. Many reviewers specialize is a specific field of romantic writing. Some reviewers will take on anything classified as romantic but the most respected ones focus on a specific field within the romantic field.

The most well known type of romantic story follows a pattern where there is a male and a female that likes each other but that are kept from each other. They go through agony and hardship but eventually they are rewarded and their love lasts forever. Romantic works also address other fields, however, such as gay themes and even darker issues such as love within the context of abuse, religion and socially taboo circumstances.

When writing a review is is important to clearly indicate the target market for which the work has been written. Gay romantic literature, for example, may not appeals to middle aged ladies that want a hero and a heroin. The introduction to the review should make the broad approach of the book clear. This will help readers to decide whether the book will be likely to satisfy their personal preferences.

No reviewer worth his salt will ever spoil the reading experience by giving away the plot. They should rather focus on the quality of language used, the way in which the characters and their experiences are described and the extent to which the author has planned the development of the story until it reaches its peak. Comparisons with previous titles by the same author can also be helpful.

Reviewers should write their publications with a very clear idea of what the potential reader will enjoy. If a romantic publication is considered vulgar, for example, the reviewer should not condemn the vulgarity due to personal preferences if the intended target market expects crude language and explicit descriptions. The review should focus on whether the intended reader will find the book enjoyable.

Romantic works will continue to be popular because there will always be people who want to believe on love and that want to escape from their ordinary lives. One only has to peruse a bookshop to see just how popular this genre is. There is nothing wrong with dreaming about a romantic story. In fact, it may even be psychologically healthy.
