Domain Registration: Where Everything Begins

By Machelle Birton

In this age of the internet, many businesses are going live on the world wide web, and more and more people are realizing just how much potential for income there is in cyberspace. If you are looking to establish an online presence for your business, setting up a website for it is necessary. But in order to get a place for your website on the internet, you first need to register domain name.

So why would you need a domain name anyway? With a domain name, your website gets its identity on cyberspace and so users will now have a way to get to your site by entering it on their browsers. Domain names are the ones that have what they call extensions and those you may already know include .com, .org, .net, and .info. Take note that your domain name should be relevant to what your site is about.

When it comes to choosing the name of your domain, using certain keywords is very much common, particularly those that are relevant to your niche. It is also possible to use your brand name if you have one. If your business is about mobile phones, then it would be good to have a keyword about mobile phones as a domain name. Just make sure that you stay away from trademarked or copyrighted names.

You will have to do business with a domain registrar if you want to register domain name the right way. Domain registrars handle all the registration activities and they allow your site to be existent on the internet. When choosing a domain registrar, a good feature to look for is their accreditation with an organization known as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Each domain registrar will have different terms and conditions, some may be slightly better than others, some worse, so it is important that you do a careful review of them. Watch out for any terms that might pose a threat to the existence of your website before you register domain name. For example, a good registrar should always notify you on time before your registration becomes expired.

You can expect to receive quality registration services from well-known domain registrars, and these services come at a price. And while there are also those that offer their services for free, are you going to risk your business with them? Remember that you always get what you pay for. A $10 per year registration is not bad at all and there are many registrars that offer their services at that rate.

When choosing a domain name for your website, there is a good chance that the first few choices you have are not available for registration anymore and your creativity will best serve you at this time. Your priority for domain names should be in the .com extension because it has a high level of authority. Domain registrars will be requiring some personal information when you register domain name.

Once you proceed to register domain name with your chosen domain registrar, it would be ideal to look for another reputable company to have your website hosted. This is so that you won't have to run into problems with your established website just in case you get into trouble with your registrar. It is a great way of spreading your risk, especially when you have made a considerable amount of investment already.
